The central theme of the all-whether site Ten Duinen 1138, is the history of the local Cistercian abbey O.-L.-V. Ten Duinen. 900 years ago hermit Ligerius retreated to the Westhoek Dunes. A one-man enterprise as the seed of a flourishing abbey community, which left its indelible mark on the region. Sobriety, simplicity, obedience and drive turned out to be powerful ideals, far beyond the current Flemish borders. The South Abbey Mill and the Ten Bogaerde Abbey Farm are a stone's throw from the ruins and are worthy witnesses to the grand past of the Duinenabdij.
